September is the ideal time to get a green lawn as the weather is warm enough to grow new grass but cool enough to repair any of the damage from the summer. However, gardeners are urged to be careful and watch out for any leaves falling into garden as the experts at Kingsbury Lawncare have warned they can greatly damage lawns.

They explained: "As we edge further into autumn, daylight hours continue to shorten and the sun is a little lower in the sky. Whereas this is a favoured time of year for many, our lawns can't produce the same level of food for themselves as they did last month. Leaves add to the problem, staving lawns for light and air movement."

It might sound a little silly, but leaves can quickly become matted together that will cause a thick layer on your grass that will completely smoother it.

This will block any light, water, air and nutrients from reaching a lawn, which will greatly weaken it, turn it yellow and eventually lead to big dead patches all over the grass.

Leaves are also known to hold a lot of moisture, and this stagnant water can encourage other problems such moss, fungal diseases as well as simply cause the grass to begin rotting.

If a lawn is covered in leaves by the time winter arrives, then it will not be healthy or strong enough to survive the cold, which means it will still be patchy and thin once spring arrives.

Leaf clearance is one of the most important gardening jobs in September, but it is very easy and should only take you a few minutes at most.

The expert added: "Leaves should be cleared from lawns as frequently as possible - twice per week as a guide dependent on the leaf fall. This will keep the lawn far happier and the garden tidy."

How to keep a lawn clear of leaves once autumn arrives

Leaves tend to fall gradually, so if you keep on top of them you will only need to clear your lawn once or twice a week depending on how many trees are nearby.

All you need to do is rake the leaves up into a pile, and then throw the remains away. If you have a large garden, then it can help to invest in a leaf blower or leaf scooper.

Many people forget that leaves often collect in hidden areas of the garden, so make sure to check any corners, under bushes and around fences as these piles are hot spots for mould.

Leaves become matted when wet which makes them more difficult to remove. Try to be vigilant and remove leaves before it rains as it will make managing your lawn a lot easier.
