Mohamed Salah has claimed he has been “thrown under the bus” by Liverpool. The Reds icon hit out at the club, including manager Arne Slot, during his shocking post-match comments on Saturday, but Salah has a different view of his teammates.
Salah was an unused substitute as the Reds conceded a late equaliser to draw 3-3 with Leeds United. The 33-year-old has recently been dropped from the team, remaining on the bench for last weekend’s victory over West Ham and coming on at half-time against Sunderland in midweek.
It has been a frustrating few days for the Egyptian star, who, before Liverpool’s last three games, was last named as a Premier League substitute in April 2024. He has reacted by arguing that he is being unfairly blamed for the team’s disappointing form.
“I am very disappointed, I have done so much for this club over years, especially last season, it seems like the club has thrown me under the bus,” Salah said. "That’s how I feel it. Someone wants me to get all the blame. The club promised me a lot in summer. Now I’m on bench, so I can say they haven’t kept those promises.”
Salah claimed that his relationship with Slot has also broken down. This is a stark contrast to his feelings towards the Liverpool squad, with the Egypt international insisting he still loves his teammates.

“No, no, no. These guys, they know how much I love them,” he said when asked if he also felt let down by his teammates. “ They know how much I support them, even inside before the game, after the game.
“I’m an experienced player. I’ve been in their position. I always support them. I always give them experience, but no, no. The players have no… They didn’t…They are not connected to the situation at all.
“Even they support me so much. So, no. There’s just much love between us as players and respect.”
Salah scored 29 league goals as Liverpool won the Premier League last season, but he has netted just four in 13 games this term. The experienced forward is set to represent Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations later this month and hinted that next weekend’s game against Brighton at Anfield could potentially be a farewell. The forward has been linked with a move to a Saudi Arabian club ahead of the January transfer window.
"I used to have a good relationship (with Slot). Now we don’t have any relationship and I don't know why,” Salah said. “(It) seems like someone does not want me in the club. I called my mum and dad and told them to come to the Brighton game.
"It doesn't matter if I play or not. I'm going to enjoy it. I am just going to be at Anfield and say goodbye to the fans before the African Cup of Nations, because I don’t know what is going to happen when I am there.
"It’s not acceptable to me to be fair. If I was somewhere else, every club would protect its players. Now it’s: ‘Throw Mo under the bus because he is a problem in a team'.
"I don’t think I am a problem. I am not fighting for my position every day because I have earned it. I am not bigger than the club. I am not bigger than anything. But I have earned it."
Salah was forced to watch on as Liverpool saw a win slip through their fingers at Elland Road. The Reds currently sit eighth in the table, 10 points behind leaders Arsenal.
