In a touching gesture of love and respect villagers in Mathura recently organised a “terahvin” a traditional Hindu mourning ritual to honour the memory of legendary superstar Dharmendra.
The tribute to the icon of Indian Cinema
The event took place in Selkhera village in the Baldev area and drew nearly 10000 people from the village and nearby areas. Locals came together to perform a traditional havan and shantipath (ritual prayers) followed by a communal feast (brahmabhoj). The gathering served as a heartfelt tribute to the veteran actor reflecting the deep affection fans in rural India continue to hold for him even after his passing.
The special screening of Sholay
As part of the memorial the villagers arranged a screening of Dharmendra’s much-loved film Sholay allowing fans to revisit his iconic performance on the big screen. Those who organised the event described Dharmendra not simply as a film star but as “a member of their own family.” Longtime admirers expressed that his films and heroic persona had left a mark on several generations and this terahvin was a way to honour his memory in a communal emotional environment. Invites were extended beyond Selkhera village people from around a dozen nearby villages joined in making the gathering a massive tribute rather than just a local event.
