Dhubri, Feb 12: In a significant breakthrough, the residents of Choto Pokalagi, a secluded village situated on the Assam-West Bengal border, have gained access to electricity for the first time since the country gained independence, putting an end to years of being cut off from the power grid.
Choto Pokalagi is uniquely positioned; although it falls under Assam's administration, it is entirely encircled by West Bengal. This peculiar geographical situation, coupled with logistical challenges, has left the village without electricity for generations.
For many years, villagers had approached various government agencies and local leaders to request basic electrical services. However, progress was slow, forcing families to depend on kerosene lamps and other traditional lighting methods.
On Thursday, their prolonged wait concluded. A collaborative initiative between the Assam Power Distribution authorities and the West Bengal electricity department successfully facilitated the extension of power supply to the village.
“Today, we say goodbye to hurricane lamps,” expressed a resident, reflecting the joyous atmosphere in the village.
Approximately 350 households in Choto Pokalagi are now linked to the electrical grid. Villagers have described this electrification as a game-changer, enhancing access to education, healthcare, and daily livelihoods.
The electrification of Choto Pokalagi represents a crucial step in improving basic infrastructure in border regions and symbolizes the long-awaited development reaching one of Assam’s most remote communities.
