WhatsApp is stepping up its language support game with a new feature aimed at breaking communication barriers—automatic, on-device message translation. The feature is currently being tested in the latest beta version for Android devices.

Translate Messages Directly on Your Device

In WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.12.25, select beta testers can now access a brand-new ‘Translate Messages’ toggle in chat settings. This feature allows automatic message translation for individual chats and channels—without ever leaving the app or compromising user privacy.

The standout element? All translations are processed locally on the user’s device. Since WhatsApp messages are protected by end-to-end encryption, the app avoids sending data to its servers by using downloadable offline language packs.

How It Works: Language Packs and Settings

Once enabled, the new translation option appears under Chat Lock settings on a per-chat basis. Users can pick their preferred language from a list that currently includes:

  • Spanish

  • Arabic

  • Portuguese (Brazil)

  • Hindi

  • Russian

After choosing a language, WhatsApp prompts users to download the corresponding language pack, allowing offline translation without relying on Meta’s servers.

Users can apply the feature globally across all chats or choose to translate messages manually by tapping a “Translate” button that appears alongside individual messages.

Building on WhatsApp’s Offline Language Capabilities

The new translation tool builds on WhatsApp’s push toward device-side AI features. Earlier in 2024, the platform rolled out voice note transcription, which also uses downloadable language packs for offline processing. Just like that feature, the new translation system respects user privacy by keeping all data processing on-device.

Key Takeaways:

  • Available on WhatsApp beta v2.25.12.25 for Android

  • Translation is done offline using language packs

  • Supports multiple global languages

  • Works in chats and channels

  • Disabled by default; can be managed per chat or globally

This move aligns WhatsApp with modern trends in privacy-conscious AI, as tech companies look for ways to enhance features without sacrificing data security.
