Portland Castle is another notable landmark on the isle. The 16th century fortress was built by Henry VIII to deter French invasions and it makes a fascinating visit if you're walking along the coastline.

"Then you'll see them everywhere, faces and figures, birds, fish and butterflies. Then you'll find a large circle of large sculpture of bison , bears , mammoth owl and the Roy dog and more. Great free few hours out in the fresh air."
In the town, there are a number of quaint pubs and restaurants to also enjoy. There are also several hotels for those looking to stay for more than one day.
The beauty of Portland is that it remains one of Britain's hidden gems. It remains fairly quiet throughout the peak holiday months which makes it perfect for those after a relaxed getaway.
