This movement proves to be essential for these birds' survival because the penguins access their feeding grounds then, which become frozen during winter. The scientists decided to take note of this phenomenon and to celebrate such an event, thereby turning it into an annual celebration in honour of these birds and raising awareness about their existence and challenges.

The celebration of this day was once limited to the Adélie penguin but now stretches to celebrate all of the approximately 17-20 existing penguin species in the world.
