Another wave of are expected next month, with 85 branches set to shut their doors for good. , Lloyds Bank and Halifax are among the numerous banks axing their tangible stores. This follows a sweeping number of closures in May, with a total of 69 banks having either already closed or will have shuttered by the end of the month. This includes the in Farnworth which was the last bank left in Bolton's second biggest town, leaving its 29,000 residents having to travel elsewhere for in-person banking services.
Of the 86 banks closing in June, 25 branches are NatWest, 24 are Santander branches, 15 are Lloyds banks, 13 are Halifax branches, seven Bank of Scotland branches, and one TSB. By the end of next month, the total number of banks to have closed in 2025 so far will reach 240, with dozens more set to shut in July and August.

In February 2022, a voluntary agreement saw all of the major banking groups commit to assessing the impact of every closure. This has led to 1,879 bank branches shutting or announcing their intention to close - an average of 12 per week.
Following this, the LINK initiative to assess the impact of closures was set up to ensure vulnerable customers and small businesses were not left behind in the switch to cashless payments and virtual banking.
When closures leave communities without any local bank, banking hubs or free ATMs are set up to fill the gap.
Despite the closures, new data from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) found that 9.7 million people visit their bank branch at least once a month, with around 3.3m people having not done any online banking in the last year.
