Poinsettias, sometimes known as Christmas flowers, are known for their bright red bracts and green leaves.

The plants symbolise good cheer and success during the festive period and are native to Mexico.

In the wild, the plant can grow to be up to 12 feet tall and there are more than 100 varieties.

More than eight million poinsettias are bought in Britain every year and are the best-selling potted plant in the USA and Canada.

While poinsettias are festive and pretty, they can be tricky to care for and are known to shed their leaves.

Keria Kay, a plant expert from Bloom & Wild has shared why the leaves on your poinsettias keep falling off.

She exclusively told Express.co.uk: "Leaf drop occurs as a result of overly warm or dry growing conditions.

"To fix this, prune back any spent leaves and move it to a slightly cooler location, make sure it has enough water and mist it using a spray bottle to replicate humidity."

Poinsettias like bright light but they don't like direct sunlight.

It's best to keep them away from draughts, radiators, open fireplaces and changing temperatures.

The best temperature for poinsettias is between 13C and 16C so keeping them on a table away from a window is good idea.

The plants need to be watered around once a week but plant owners should only water them when the soil is dry to the touch.

The plants should be watered in the sink and allowed to drain before being put back in their original position.

Poinsettias can be kept year after year if they're given the correct care.
