Spain's Canary Islands are one of the UK's leading winter sun destinations. With their volcanic landscapes, gorgeous beaches and year-round good weather, it's not hard to see why.

But when's the cheapest time of year to travel to the islands?

In an exclusive experiment for Express.co.uk , I searched Skyscanner to find the cheapest time of year to fly to top Canary Island destinations.

I looked for flights to Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Bear in mind that these prices might not include luggage or seat selection.

El Hierro and La Gomera are two quieter islands in the Canaries but they can't be reached on a direct flight from the UK.

Famed for sand dune beaches and volcanic landscapes, Gran Canaria is one of the most popular islands. Maspalomas Beach is the island's best-rated beach.

According to Skyscanner, March is the cheapest month to travel to Gran Canaria with return flights available from just £41. There are also attractive offers in April and May with flights on offer for under £70.

The most expensive months to travel to the island are August and September with return flights upwards of £120.

The largest Canary Island, Tenerife is home to Mount Teide, Spain's tallest mountain and several gorgeous beaches.

March and April were the cheapest months to fly to Tenerife according to Skyscanner with return flights for just £52.

Unsurprisingly, the most expensive month to travel to Tenerife was August as its peak school holiday season. However, with Tenerife's sunny spring weather, there's no need to wait until summer if you're not tied to term dates.

Lanzarote might have fantastic beaches but the island is also an exciting destination for tourists interested in volcanic landscapes. Go for a camel ride in Timanfaya National Park to see it at its best.

While March was the cheapest month to fly to Lanzarote with return flights on offer from just £40, there were also return flights available for under £50 in April and May.

Once again, August was the most expensive month to travel to Lanzarote with prices upwards of £150 for a return journey.

The second-largest Canary Island, Fuerteventura is known for its white-sand beaches and is particularly popular for watersports.

March and April were the cheapest months to fly to the island with prices under £60 for return flights in each month.

August was the most expensive month to travel to the island but October and November were also good value with prices under £100 for a return.
