It is no secret that airfares are touching the roof right now. Add to this misery a range of other miscellaneous charges that airlines levy on travellers. User Development Fee, Fuel Charge, Carrier Imposed Surcharge - the list runs the gamut. But have you heard of a ‘Cute’ Charge?Shrayansh Singh, a Lucknow-based advocate, recently raised eyebrows on social media after discovering a "Cute Charge" on his IndiGo flight ticket. The peculiar fee, listed among other charges like the "User Development Fee" and "Aviation Security Fee," prompted Singh to question the airline's rationale.Taking to X, Singh humorously wondered if the airline was charging passengers for their own cuteness or simply acknowledging the cuteness of its planes. His post quickly garnered attention, sparking a wider debate about the transparency and justification of airport fees.

In response, IndiGo clarified that the "Cute Charge" is actually a Common User Terminal Equipment (CUTE) charge, covering the use of airport facilities like escalators and metal detectors. However, Singh remained unconvinced, arguing that airport security equipment, often managed by government agencies like the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), should be funded by the government. He also expressed his frustration with the unclear and seemingly arbitrary charges. He questioned the airline about the "User Development Fee," asking how it contributes to his personal development during the flight. He also challenged the "Aviation Security Fee," suggesting that his taxes should already cover the necessary security measures. “Space has been commodified to its extreme by airlines,” he wrote on X.

The conversation ignited a heated online discussion, with many users siding with Singh and criticising the airline for what they perceived as unfair charges. Others defended the airline, explaining that such fees are common practice in the aviation industry. “‘It's been happening for a long time’ does not make it right,” commented Singh.
