Wednesday saw the demolition of unlawful buildings in Vashi, Koparkhairane, and Nerul as part of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s (NMMC) ongoing campaign against unapproved construction. This operation resulted in the removal of three unauthorized buildings.

Action was taken against unapproved projects in the Koparkhairane Division in compliance with Bombay High Court decisions and with the direction of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde. The demolition campaign was prompted by the parties’ noncompliance with the Encroachment Department’s notifications.

Aftab Zakaria Janvekar and Parvez Zakaria Janvekar were building in Sector 2 without authorization, according to the Vashi ward office, without the municipal corporation’s consent. They were given instructions to voluntarily dismantle the unpermitted structure in accordance with Section 53 1(a) of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966. But they persisted in their illicit job.

The Vashi ward office therefore launched a demolition campaign, which resulted in the partial removal of the illegal building. The culprits also had to pay a punishment of Rs 25,000. Officers and employees from the Encroachment Department were present throughout the demolition operation, which was overseen by Assistant Commissioner Sagar More. Ten workers, a JCB machine, and an electrical hammer were used in the drive.

Pawar K.M. and D.P. Pawar were discovered to be engaging in unlawful construction in Sector 15, Koparkhairane, in a related case. Section 54 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966, was used to issue notices, and demolition work was done.

Assistant Commissioner Sunil Kathole oversaw the demolition effort in Koparkhairane, and police were there to ensure security during the operation.

In Nerul, the NMMC addressed concerns about two illegal huts that were built next to Gayatri House on Forest Department property close to Uran Phata. As part of a larger demolition effort, these huts—which were under the authority of NMMC’s B ward—were destroyed on December 11, 2024.

With assistance from officials and personnel from the Nerul, Vashi, and Koparkhaiarne divisions as well as police security measures, the operation in Nerul was executed under the direction of Deputy Commissioner Dr. Rahul Gethe (Encroachment).
