is the latest major retailer to issue a recall on a product after a potentially deadly bacteria was linked to it.

A recall notice published by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) states that "Lidl Northern Ireland is recalling a batch of Deluxe Sriracha Cheddar Cheese Wedge because Listeria monocytogenes was found in it."

Listeria infection is a foodborne bacterial illness that can be very serious and is most commonly caused by eating improperly processed deli meats and unpasteurized milk products.

The FSA issues Product Recall Information Notices to inform consumers and local authorities about food-related problems.

If a food product has a problem that means it should not be sold, it might be withdrawn from shop shelves or , in which case customers are asked to return the product.

Listeria monocytogenes are present in the above product. The FSA warned: "Symptoms caused by this organism can be similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea.

"However, in rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications, such as meningitis."

The independent government body added that some people are more vulnerable to listeria infections, including those over 65 years of age, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one-month-old and people with weakened immune systems.

Advice to customers who have purchased the affected product is to avoid eating it and return it to where it was bought for a full refund.
