Airtel has introduced two new voice and SMS-only plans, aiming to cater to its large base of 2G subscribers. The move follows a directive from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), which urged telecom operators to roll out affordable voice-only packages. While this effort aligns with TRAI’s vision of economical offerings for 2G users, the exclusion of data from these plans has left some consumers questioning the value proposition.
At the end of December, TRAI recommended that telecom providers offer affordable, voice and SMS-only plans to cater to India’s significant base of 2G subscribers, many of whom lack access to smartphones or affordable data plans. This guidance aims to bridge the digital divide and ensure basic connectivity for all.
While Airtel’s plans fulfill the directive, the exclusion of bundled data represents a step back for some consumers. Previously, these plans included 6GB (Rs 509) and 24GB (Rs 1,999) of data, which added value for users needing occasional internet access.
For consumers who rely heavily on voice calls, the plans offer excellent value. However, for those transitioning from 2G to more advanced networks, the lack of data may feel restrictive in an increasingly digital world.
Additional Benefits: Value Beyond Calls and SMSBoth plans come with a suite of complimentary services:
Airtel’s voice-only plans align with TRAI’s objective of enhancing affordability for 2G subscribers. However, the removal of data from these packages raises questions about whether this truly meets the evolving needs of today’s consumers.
With Reliance Jio preparing to enter the space and BSNL maintaining its presence, the telecom sector is set to witness increased competition in the voice-only segment. Consumers will benefit from more choices, but the challenge remains: how to balance affordability with features that cater to modern needs.
