Just like many items, after frequent use and regular washing, towels can become rough and scratchy and lose the softness that makes them so comfortable following a steamy bath or shower.

Abrasive towels can also irritate and damage soft skin, so they should not be used too aggressively.

However, according to the laundry experts at , instead of throwing them out or opting for , another product can remove detergent buildup and make your towels soft again.

They said, "If you wash your towels correctly, you should prevent them from losing their soft and fluffy feel, as well as any loss of quality and colour.

"You can make your towels soft if you have a build-up of detergent or fabric softener that's clogging up those lovely loops of cotton and will do the trick.

"Adding baking soda to your towel wash helps remove soap and chemical residue that can end up covering your towels."

For this method, add half a cup of baking soda with your washing detergent, then wash as usual.

Baking soda will also naturally eliminate any musty odours that your towels may have acquired.

Laundry experts at Linens Limited also recommend using baking soda to soften towels and claim that "baking soda is a better option than vinegar".

They explained: "Similar to vinegar, baking soda is used in a number of alternative cleaning methods.

"Add half a cup of baking soda to your wash and it will react with any softener residue and dissolve it. In addition, it may eliminate certain odours accrued from dampness."

To stop your now fluffy towels from turning rough and scratchy again, wash them in warm water with just the right amount of laundry detergent.

The "best way to dry your towels so that they regain their cosy softness and fluffiness", is to use a tumble dryer on a low heat setting. High heat can damage the cotton fibres.

If you don't have or don't want to use a dryer, if it's a warm or windy day, line dry your towels in the fresh air.

However, if you are drying your towels indoors, make sure they are either laid flat over a drying rack or are hung out flat.
