On April 10, Gippy Grewal’s enormous project, Akaal: The Unconquered, debuted in theatres. The portrayal of the Sikh community was problematic in the Punjabi film, even though it received positive reviews from reviewers. According to news service IANS, Akaal was charged with hurting people’s sentiments.
Baba Bakshish Singh said that Akaal portrayed Sikhs as mundit’ (hairless), drinking, and smoking tobacco, thereby demeaning them. Even though he threatened to ban the distribution of films like Akaal in Punjab, he said that actors playing Sikh soldiers like Jassa Singh Ahluwalia or Hari Singh Nalwa should treat them with respect if their roles are based on their lives.
After accusing the government of supporting filmmakers “whose motive is to undermine Sikh history”, Baba Bakshish Singh was allegedly taken into custody by Punjab police.
In the meanwhile, the theatrical run of Gippy’s third Bollywood film, Akaal, has started off well. According to the latest Sacnilk figures, the Punjabi-language multilingual film generated around Rs 85 lakhs on its first day of release. Overall, the Punjabi occupancy rate at Akaal was 11.80% on Thursday, April 10, 2025.
According to a page named NewZNew, Akaal was produced on a budget of Rs 15 crore.
