The tech compannyy Eulogy delivers a box emblazoned with "full spectrum memory curation" and packs a "guide disk".

Once activated, this disk chatters away at Phillip, offering to steer him through his recollections of Carol to prepare for her farewell.

Phillip then puts the disk to his temple, urged by the guide's voice to envision Carol, but she blurs in his memory, lost to time.

As he scours for a photograph of her face, the guide suggests a deeper journey into his snapshots to spark his fading memories of Carol.

Upon entering, he is greeted by a tangible version of The Guide, who talks him through various photographs.

The initial snapshot captures the moment Carol's back is facing the camera, surrounded by friends at the rooftop party where she and Phillip first crossed paths.

Phillip reminisced about how Carol, a newcomer to the neighbourhood, would often seclude herself to play the cello in her bedroom.

He remembered she had a boyfriend at that time, but The Guide corrects him, indicating the engagement ring on Carol's finger in the hazy photo, leaving Phillip perplexed.

Another picture brings them back to a different bash where young Phillip is seen chatting with Carol; though, her face remained hidden from view.

Phillip looks on with a smile, sharing how "funny" she was and recalling this was the evening they first spent together.

In the third image, Phillip stands in a corridor, gazing into a room where the silhouette of Carol is playing an original composition on the cello, yet she remains unseen.

Subsequently, Phillip searches for more photos but discovers her face has been scribbled out or snipped away in all of them because of their split.

Despite this, The Guide escorts Phillip into one of the pictures that depicts the young duo performing in a band on stage.

Although it shows Carol at the keyboard—a stark contrast to her love for the cello—Phillip justifies it didn't suit their sound, a rationale that The Guide doesn't quite accept.

Another snapshot captures Carol turning away from a man attempting to get close to her.

However, Phillip interprets the situation differently, convinced that she was flirting with him throughout the evening.

In another scene, Phillip is seen working behind the bar with Emma, who has her hands on his shoulders. The Guide suggests that Carol might have been envious of their intimacy.

Phillip remembers having a row with Carol, who then blamed him for keeping her up late when she had an audition for the Brooklyn Philharmonic the following day.

However, another opportunity presented itself for Carol to join the orchestra for Phantom Of The Opera in London for six months, which she accepted.

During her absence, their relationship was put to the test as a photo revealed him lying on the bed with Emma taking the picture.

Phillip confesses that they slept together that night and when Carol called, it was Emma who answered, leaving his girlfriend livid.

Despite this, he still flew out to London for a planned visit with the intention of proposing at a posh restaurant.

Phillip proposed, but it quickly became apparent something was amiss when she remained silent and walked out without a word.

The Guide reveals in the photograph of the restaurant scene that she is actually a disposable avatar of Carol's daughter Kelly, whom she taught to play the cello.

She embodies Kelly's thoughts and feelings, serving as a tool for Eulogy to collect real Kelly's memories without exposing her to everything.

She reveals that her father was the result of a one-night stand Carol had with an orchestra member, who left her pregnant - hence why she walked out.

When Phillip and Kelly enter a projection of their hotel room from that night, they find Carol's belongings missing.

Phillip initially thought she had left without a word, but a photo reveals a missed note on the floor that he can't retrieve.

Distraught at the thought of never reading the message, Phillip recalls the hotel cleaners packing up his items into a box.

He then discovers the note tucked inside a book, in which Carol asks him to meet her at the stage door after the next day's performance if he wishes to continue their relationship.

Unfortunately, since he never received the note, Phillip didn't meet her, and they never saw each other again.

At this juncture, he retrieves a cassette tape and plays a recording of Carol's original cello composition, before the scene shifts to Phillip attending the funeral.

In the foreground, the real-life Kelly is seen playing her mother's cello piece, triggering the memory of him watching her in the hallway years ago.

This time, however, Phillip finally remembers what she looks like as Carol is seen smiling back at him.

Black Mirror is available to watch on Netflix.
