The England women’s cricket team has successfully completed the T20 international series against India, winning the last match at The Kia Oval by the close margin of five runs. India’s vice-captain Smriti Mandhana fought valiantly, but her side’s collective will did not match up to England’s effort, and England’s tense bowling at the death overs sealed the contest in favor of the hosts.
England’s batting first after winning the toss, set a target of 130 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs. Their innings was anchored by Alice Capsey, who scored 51 runs from 34 balls. Although England lost some early wickets, Amy Jones and Freya Kemp’s Yeoman Skills also aided the lower order ensuring that at the very least, the score was defendable. From India’s perspective, the returning Shreyanka Patil did separate some portions for her side, picking up 2 wickets for 34 runs alongside Deepti Sharma who also took 2 wickets.
While pursuing 131 to win the match, India suffered an early collapse in their innings. Nevertheless, the agile Smriti Mandhana composed herself and counter-attacked beautifully. To keep hopes alive for India, she scored a staggering 78 off 50 balls, which included several boundaries paired with smart hitting. Mandhana was not shy to play aggressively, as she took advantage of any loose ball given to her.
In what could easily be termed the most entertaining portion of the match, India required 11 runs in the final over with Mandhana still batting and Freya Kemp set to bowl for England. Mandhana hit a four on the first ball of the over, only to lose her wicket later which shrunk India’s chances of a fairytale ending. The game had white knuckle tension for the last few deliveries and even though India did get close, they lost the match at 125 for 7.
Sarah Glenn was instrumental in India’s middle order collapse, as she picked up 4 wickets for 26 runs. England as a whole bowled the Indian batters out quickly and took every chance given to them. Wong was equally sharp and steady in the critical last over as well.
With this narrow five-run win, England not only triumphed in the match but also clinched the T20I series 2-1, showcasing their dominance at home against a tough Indian team. Look forward to the next phase of the series which will be in ODI format.
