This small and isolated island, hidden amongst the Canary Islands, goes so untouched that there's only one person registered as living there. Spain is home to such a vast amount of territories covering great geographical diversity, from huge cities to uninhabited islands, just like this one. Lobos Island is located just north of Fuerteventura, in the Canary archipelago, and sits at just 5 km².

The small space makes up for it with bounds of natural beauty, crystal clear waters, and untouched, protected biodiversity. Its uniqueness carries plenty of history and makes it an absolute must-see if you're visiting Fuerteventura. While it belongs to the municipality of La Oliva (Fuerteventura), it has a past of its own, very much linked to survival. For centuries, Lobos acted as a refuge for local fishermen and sailors before the standout Punta Martiño lighthouse was built on the island in the 19th century.

This creation gave the area a new lease of life and allowed some families to temporarily settle on the island. However, the automation of the lighthouse in 1968 meant that both the families and the lighthouse keepers had to leave the area in a state of desertion.

In an unusual turn of events, recent data has confirmed that one person still remains on the island. According to the Canary Islands newspaper La Provincia, the daughter of the historic lighthouse keeper, María Jesús Hernández, is the only individual registered to be on Lobos.

Better known as Maruca, she is now 70 years old. She is committed to helping her community and is a prominent activist of the Corralejo Old Town Victims' Collective. She has fought to defend the rights of more than 100 homeowners when a real estate scheme threatened to seize their properties, and she continues to be passionate about offshore spaces.

In an attempt to protect and preserve the island, restricted access has been put in place since 2019. This means that nowadays, visitors will need to present a special permit from the council granting them permission to enter the island, and therefore limiting the number of tourists visiting daily.

In spite of this, Lobos continues to be a well-sought-after spot for Canary Island holidaymakers looking to explore untouched, breathtaking landscapes. Despite this, it remains a very attractive destination for those seeking tranquillity and almost unaltered landscapes. As a part of this, there are a number of excursions you can book, taking you to the island, which now has over 1,000 TripAdvisor reviews, boasting all about their visit.

Many of these reviews mention taking a hike to explore the views from the lighthouse or simply using the area as a sunbathing spot. Other travellers have advised those interested in taking a more adventurous route to wear sensible clothing.

One review reads: "As soon as you arrive, you can decide on the routes to do; a few steps away, there are very nice beaches where you can swim, while for the more 'adventurers', there is a path to the lighthouse (north of the island). It takes about 45 minutes (45 going and 45 returning) at a normal pace - arm yourself with sunscreen, comfortable shoes, and a hat because if it is a sunny day, you will need it. The path is very easy, but it is better to have good shoes."

Another tourist claimed: "Very good option, excellent place to get lost between volcanic trails hiking and bathe in the coves that are all over the island. If you travel to Fuerteventura, you should not stop doing this excursion. From the port of Corralejo, there are boats of different companies that, in 20 minutes, leave you on the island, and you have several options of schedules for the return."
