Atari's latest gaming console is a homage to the 1970s
18 Oct 2025
Atari has announced a new retro console, the Intellivision Sprint, in collaboration with Plaion.
The new hardware is a modern take on Mattel's original Intellivision from 1979. The original model was one of Atari's biggest competitors in the gaming market.
The Sprint retains the vintage look of its predecessor but comes with modern gaming conveniences and wireless controllers that charge when docked to the console.
The console connects to TV via HDMI cable
Design evolution
The Intellivision Sprint retains the gold and black casing with a wood-grain panel on the front, just like its predecessor. However, it has been simplified with fewer cables.
The console connects to a TV via a single HDMI cable, making it more user-friendly than its predecessor.
It also comes with two wireless controllers featuring dials and number pads instead of joysticks, which charge when docked to the console.
Comes with 45 built-in games
Controller
The Intellivision Sprint also keeps the controller overlays from the original model, but with new designs and updated artwork.
This is to make it easier for players to know what buttons they need to press for different games.
The console comes with 45 built-in titles, including classics like Boulder Dash and Astrosmash, as well as a collection of sports games that made the original model popular.
The console is available for pre-order
Availability
While the Intellivision Sprint doesn't support cartridges, it does come with USB-A ports. These can be used to play additional titles or connect original Intellivision controllers with an adapter.
The console is available for pre-order at $149.99 and will start shipping on December 5, 2025.
This move by Atari marks a major step in reviving retro gaming consoles and making them accessible to modern gamers.
