The City of Seattle has agreed to pay $29 million (approximately Rs 262 crore) to the family of 23-year-old Indian graduate student Jaahnavi Kandula, who was fatally struck by a speeding police vehicle in 2023, as per reports.

Kandula was crossing a street when Officer Kevin Dave, responding to a drug overdose call, hit her while driving at speeds of up to 74 mph (119 km/h) in a 25 mph (40 km/h) zone. Authorities said the officer had activated his emergency lights and used his siren at intersections.

In a statement issued Wednesday, City Attorney Erika Evans expressed condolences, saying, “Jaahnavi Kandula's death was heartbreaking, and the city hopes this financial settlement brings some sense of closure to the Kandula family. Jaahnavi Kandula's life mattered — to her family, her friends, and our community.”

At the time of her death, Kandula was pursuing a master’s degree in information systems at Northeastern University’s Seattle campus.

The settlement agreement was first reported by local news outlet PubliCola.
