A rare and dynamic weather pattern is currently unfolding over the Indian subcontinent, raising concerns of severe weather events, even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple alerts across regions.

Climate scientist Dr. Pradeep, who runs the popular X handle All India Weather (@allindiaweather), has flagged an unusual overlap of two powerful jet streams influencing India’s weather simultaneously.

According to him, the northern jet stream is sweeping across North India, injecting energy, wind shear, and atmospheric instability — conditions that can trigger severe thunderstorms, hailstorms, and dust storms.

At the same time, the southern jet stream is flowing across Peninsular India, interacting with moisture and surface heating. This is leading to hybrid thunderstorms and intense convective activity in southern regions.

The interaction of these two systems is creating a highly dynamic atmosphere, where upper-level winds are enhancing vertical motion across large parts of the country.

Dr. Pradeep has warned of intense thunderstorm development, large hail in isolated pockets, strong gusty winds, and rapid weather changes in the coming days.

“Satellite and wind field data clearly show how these jets are shaping convection across India — a classic yet rare overlapping influence,” he said, cautioning that this is not typical pre-monsoon activity and conditions could escalate quickly. He also noted that the analysis is based on model guidance and satellite interpretation, and may carry some uncertainties.

Meanwhile, the IMD has issued multiple warnings across states:

  • A red alert has been issued for Andhra Pradesh districts including Prakasam, Guntur, Krishna, Eluru, NTR, and West Godavari, with severe thunderstorms, gusty winds of 62–87 kmph, and moderate rainfall expected.

  • An orange alert is in place for Jammu region, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds likely.

In its latest advisory, the IMD said that scattered thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected to continue over the Western Himalayan region and northwest plains until March 20.

“Thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and heavy rainfall or hailstorms are likely across parts of Northwest, Central, and East India over the next few days. Stay alert and take necessary precautions,” the IMD said.

The evolving weather situation underscores the need for vigilance, as conditions across the country remain volatile.
