New Delhi. A very relieving news is coming for the users troubled by the skyrocketing prices of mobile recharge. It is often seen that even people who do not need internet are forced to do expensive data recharges. But now the government has made preparations to end this game of “forced data recharge”. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has taken a revolutionary step which will reduce the burden on the common man’s pocket.
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India i.e. TRAI has presented a new draft proposal. Under this proposal, companies like Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone-Idea (Vi) will now have to offer special plans in which only calling and SMS facilities are available. The biggest benefit of this will be to the elderly, people of rural areas and feature phone users who have nothing to do with the Internet. TRAI believes that users should not be forced to buy unwanted data plans.
After the implementation of this new rule of TRAI, telecom companies will have to change their strategy. Till now, there are very few voice calling plans in the market or they come with long validity (like 84 days or one year). According to the new proposal, companies will have to offer a data-free plan with each popular validity—such as 28 days, 56 days and 84 days. The most important thing is that the price of these data-free plans will have to be much lower than the existing combo plans, due to which the users will save money.
The government intends to make this system completely transparent. Companies will have to clearly display these cheap ‘voice and SMS’ plans on their websites, mobile apps and stores so that any customer can easily choose them. At present, TRAI has sought suggestions and feedback from all concerned parties on this proposal till 28 April 2026. If everything goes according to plan, soon a big change will be seen in the world of mobile recharge.
This decision will have a direct impact on companies like Jio, Airtel and Vi. They will have to make drastic changes in their existing recharge portfolio. Companies will now have to design affordable plans afresh. Although this may affect the average revenue per user (ARPU) of companies, but for customers it is no less than a lottery. Now users will be able to choose the right and cheapest plan as per their needs and they will not have to pay extra money for unnecessary data.
