May 1 Rule Changes Update: Starting May 1st, significant changes are set to take place regarding rules related to banking, investments, and LPG bookings—changes that will have a direct impact on your finances.

Major Changes from May 1: With just two days remaining, the month of May is about to begin. During this period, several changes will be implemented—ranging from LPG cylinder bookings to credit card regulations—and it is essential for everyone to be aware of them. In this report today, we will provide you with detailed information regarding these upcoming changes.

Changes to Rules Related to LPG Cylinders

LPG Cylinder Booking: Under the changes effective from May 1st, you will no longer be able to book a second LPG cylinder immediately after receiving the delivery of the first one. You will now be required to wait for a minimum of 25 days for a booking in urban areas, and up to 45 days for a booking in rural areas.

OTP-Based Delivery: Starting May 1st, providing a DAC (Delivery Authentication Code) or OTP will be mandatory at the time of delivery. Without this code, the delivery agent will not be able to hand over the cylinder to you.

e-KYC Mandatory: Beneficiaries of the PM Ujjwala Yojana are required to complete the Aadhaar-based e-KYC process to ensure the continued receipt of their subsidy.

Price Hikes: Indian Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) such as HPCL, Indian Oil, and BPCL determine the prices of LPG cylinders for domestic, commercial, and industrial use. Indian Oil sells LPG under the ‘Indane’ brand; BPCL sells cylinders under ‘Bharat Gas’; and HPCL sells them under ‘HP Gas’. These companies typically revise LPG prices at the beginning of every month. Meanwhile, due to economic uncertainty and geopolitical instability, OMCs are currently facing significant financial pressure. It is possible that a portion of this financial burden may be passed on to the customers.

New Labor Law in Uttar Pradesh

Preparations are in full swing in Uttar Pradesh to implement a new labor law starting May 1st. Under this new legislation, if an employee works even 15 minutes beyond their scheduled working hours, they must be compensated with overtime pay. Under the new regulations, the basic salary component can be set at a minimum of 50 percent of the total CTC (Cost to Company). This will result in increased contributions towards PF (Provident Fund) and Gratuity, which, in turn, will impact the employee’s take-home salary.

The annual premiums for the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) are scheduled to be auto-debited in May. Amounts of ₹436 and ₹20, respectively, may be deducted from accounts. Account holders who have subscribed to these schemes are advised to maintain a sufficient balance in their accounts.

Auto-Debit of PMJJBY and PMSBY Premiums

The annual premiums for the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) will be auto-debited in May. This means that ₹436 and ₹20 will be automatically deducted from your linked bank account. Consequently, beneficiaries of these schemes must ensure they maintain an adequate balance in their accounts.

Setback for SBI and YES Bank Customers

Effective May 1st, the State Bank of India (SBI) may levy late payment charges even on small outstanding dues. Additionally, starting May 1st, YES Bank will impose an additional charge of 1 percent on utility transactions.
