Meta has launched a new 'Instants' feature for Instagram, allowing users to privately share photos with their friends. A key highlight is that the shared photos will automatically disappear after they have been viewed.
Meta has introduced a new feature called 'Instants' for Instagram users. This feature is designed to make photo sharing among friends quicker, easier, and more fun. The company states that with the help of Instants, users can snap a photo instantly—without extensive editing—and share it directly to their Instagram Inbox. Alongside this, Meta has also begun testing a standalone 'Instants' app in select countries, which will be available on both Android and iOS platforms. This app is designed to offer a quick photo-sharing experience similar to Snapchat, while still incorporating Instagram's existing privacy and safety features.
What is Instagram's New 'Instants' Feature?
According to Meta, Instants is a lightweight and fast photo-sharing feature that focuses on sharing real-time moments with friends. This feature will appear in the bottom-right corner of the Instagram Inbox, allowing users to instantly snap a photo and send it to their 'Close Friends' list or 'Mutual Followers.'
The company notes that photo editing capabilities within this feature have been kept quite limited to encourage users to share more natural and authentic moments. Users can add a caption before sending a photo, but no changes can be made to it once it has been sent.
Shared photos will appear as a stack within the recipient's Inbox and will automatically disappear after they have been viewed. Recipients will also be able to react to or reply to these photos.
Features Like 'Archive' and 'Undo' are included
Meta has confirmed that several additional features accompany Instants. Shared Instants will be saved in a private 'Archive' for up to one year. This Archive can also be used to compile past Instants into 'Recap Stories.'
Furthermore, users will have access to an 'Undo' option, allowing them to retract a photo immediately after sending it—provided the recipient has not yet opened it. Testing Begins for a Separate 'Instants' App
Meta has also introduced a standalone 'Instants' app—distinct from Instagram—which is currently being tested in select countries. The company states that this app is designed to provide quick access to the camera.
Users will be able to log in using their existing Instagram accounts, and the 'Instants' shared on this app will automatically sync with their Instagram profiles. However, the company has clarified that the app is currently in an experimental stage and may undergo changes based on user feedback.
Special Focus on Privacy and Teen Safety
Meta affirms that Instagram's existing privacy and moderation tools will also apply to the 'Instants' feature. Users will have access to features such as Block, Mute, and Restrict.
For teenage users, this feature will be integrated with Instagram's Teen Accounts and Family Centre Supervision tools. It will offer features such as Screen Time Limits, a 'Sleep Mode' active from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM, and notifications for parents when their children download the Instants app.
