Nestled between two of North England's most stunning attractions lies a tranquil town, ideal for a pit stop during your travels, brimming with independent businesses and abundant charm.

At the heart of Cumbria sits a picturesque town, positioned between the magnificent Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District, where bookshops and cafes are ready to welcome you.

Sedbergh is a historic market town that's transformed its identity to become something of a haven for independent businesses to flourish, catering to tourists and visitors with literature and a cup of tea.

It has since earned recognition as England's 'book town', being home to numerous bookshops. This accolade was bestowed upon it, alongside 45 other towns worldwide, in 2006 within a publication known as Book Towns by Alex Johnson.

Bookshops

Perhaps the most renowned of all the bookshops in Sedbergh is the impressive Westwood Books, which also happens to be the largest. It occupies what was once the sole cinema on Long Lane and now operates as a shop with a reported 70,000 different titles lining its shelves.

Following a visit to Westwood Books, one customer wrote on TripAdvisor: "I had a wonderful visit to this absolute gem of a bookshop today. Being a mobility scooter user, I find most shops difficult to navigate around, especially as I also have long-term vertigo. This could not have been easier, and the lovely owners could not have been more welcoming or helpful."

Another shared: "We came for the books and weren't disappointed. This place is huge, more like a warehouse than a shop. Fantastic for book lovers to loiter and browse."

Further shops in the area include Sleepy Elephant, which specialises in books alongside walking gear for those tackling the dales. The town is also home to Clutterbooks, a community charity bookshop, and The Old School Room Bookshop, which focuses on selling second-hand titles.

Places to eat and drink

Scattered along Main Street in the heart of the town are numerous spots to pause for a cup of coffee, pot of tea and a slice of delectable cakes and bakes.

There is no shortage of options when it comes to food and drink in Sedbergh, and one establishment boasting a particularly warm and welcoming atmosphere is Mug Story. Located at 73 Main Street, the vast majority of customers appear to depart leaving glowing 'excellent' TripAdvisor reviews.

One customer shared: "We had the best coffee on the Dales Way! The guys in the shop are friendly. They make great takeaway sandwiches and have tasty sweet treats too. The coffee is AMAZING!"

A firm favourite amongst locals and visitors alike is Smatt's Duo Cafe, which takes pride in serving up hearty breakfasts and satisfying lunches, alongside coffees and cakes.

One diner even declared it a 'must visit' for anyone in the vicinity, adding: "Many visits to this cafe over the years when we are in the Sedbergh area.

"We can only reiterate what we have posted in our previous reviews. The food is excellent, and the service is top-notch. The atmosphere is very relaxed."

There's also a bar available for those seeking something slightly stronger and locally produced. The micro bar, The Thirsty Rambler, welcomes not only guests but their dogs as well for a pint of their regional ales, gins and wines.
