Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya M Scindia on Monday announced that India Post is leveraging technology to reinvent its legacy operations for the 21st century, ushering in citizen-centric services designed to meet modern digital expectations. Speaking at a Department of Posts event in New Delhi, Scindia launched the revamped Dak Mitra and Dak Sewa mobile applications and inaugurated 14 newly renovated post offices across the country.

Scindia said that the day marks not merely the launch of new initiatives, but an opportunity to connect the legacy of one of India's most trusted institutions with modern technology. "Today, citizens do not merely expect government services to be available; they want these services available on their mobile phones, at the touch of a button, and delivered in a fast, simple and transparent manner. Our responsibility is not merely to digitise old processes, but to redesign the entire process around the citizen," he said.

Revamped Mobile Applications

Dak Mitra App is designed to empower postal staff across 1.4 lakh Branch Post Offices, bringing postal, banking, insurance, and citizen services into one portal. Since May 2025, the platform has facilitated 2.45 crore Speed Post and parcel bookings, supported the delivery of 15.09 crore articles, and generated ₹5,431 crore in total premium collection.

Dak Sewa App, a citizen-facing application available in 23 Indian languages, has recorded nearly 10 lakh downloads and 91.34 lakh mail/parcel bookings since its June 2025 pilot. It enables tracking, e-Money Orders, charge calculations, insurance access, complaint logging, and digital payments via UPI, internet banking, and cards.

Post Office Modernisation and New Services

Scindia said, "Earlier, citizens had to visit the post office to access services, but today, the postal worker is taking those services to the citizen. This is the true power of digital transformation," he said. Features like Aadhaar-based e-KYC for instant account opening and biometric cash withdrawals are shifting services directly to citizens' homes.

Modernisation is underway for 40 post offices across 17 states, with 27 completed. The 14 post offices inaugurated today are located at Patliputra (Bihar), Vasant Kunj (Delhi), Sector-56 Gurugram (Haryana), Kakurgachi (Kolkata), Vidisha and Sanchi (Madhya Pradesh), Shillong (Meghalaya), Kandivali West (Mumbai), Shankar Nagar and Ayodhya Nagar (Nagpur), Nirala Nagar, Gomti Nagar and Indira Nagar (Lucknow), and Prayagraj.

Significant Revenue Growth

India Post recorded a revenue growth of nearly 16%, rising from ~₹13,218 crore in FY 2024-25 to ₹15,296 crore in FY 2025-26. In Q1 FY 2026-27, the department achieved its highest-ever quarterly revenue of ₹4,008.95 crore--a ~22% year-on-year increase.

Balancing Technology with Trust

Union Minister Scindia emphasised that digital transformation does not diminish the importance of physical post offices. Post offices continue to be vital centres of trust, human connection and access to government services for millions of Indians.

Scindia said that the true success of India Post cannot be measured merely by the number of app downloads or modernised post offices. Its success will ultimately be determined by how much these initiatives simplify the work of postal employees and how much faster, simpler, more accessible and transparent they make services for citizens.

"Old trust, new technology; the same warmth, new speed. This is the new India Post," he said. Scindia noted that these upgrades align with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, ensuring physical branches remain vital hubs of trust while technology scales their nationwide impact. (ANI)
