KTM’s long-discussed 490 Duke has finally appeared in prototype form, and the motorcycle being tested in Europe confirms one major change: this will be a twin-cylinder Duke positioned above the 390.

The prototype uses a new parallel-twin engine expected to displace just under 500cc. European reports point to output in the 55 to 65 bhp region, with a lower-output version capped at about 48 bhp for Europe’s A2 licence rules.


The new platform is still under development. A public debut is expected towards the end of 2027, possibly at EICMA, followed by a market launch in early 2028. There is no confirmed India price yet. The current 390 Duke costs around Rs 2.84 lakh ex-showroom, but quoting a 490 Duke price now would be speculation.

The test motorcycle is clearly unfinished. Its headlamp, instrument display and mirrors appear to have been borrowed from the 390 Duke for testing, so those parts should not be treated as production design. The frame and running gear are more revealing.


KTM is using a tubular steel trellis frame with the engine acting as a stressed member. Unlike the current 390 Duke’s composite rear subframe, the prototype has a bolt-on trellis subframe. There is also a curved aluminium-style swingarm arrangement, with the catalytic converter packaged underneath. The exhaust system appears much closer to production specification than the temporary bodywork.


Braking equipment includes a single front disc with a radial-mounted WP calliper and radial master cylinder. The bike runs on 17-inch alloy wheels at both ends, as expected for a street-focused Duke. These changes suggest KTM is developing a distinct middleweight platform rather than simply enlarging the 390’s single-cylinder engine.

The engine is the biggest reason this motorcycle matters. KTM’s 390 Duke uses a 399cc single-cylinder engine producing around 46 bhp. Moving to a twin of just under 500cc and potentially 55 to 65 bhp would create a noticeable performance step without jumping all the way to KTM’s larger LC8c twins.


Reports suggest the new engine could use a 270-degree crankshaft. In simple terms, that firing arrangement gives a parallel-twin a less even firing pulse and a character closer to a V-twin than a conventional 180-degree parallel-twin. The final output remains unconfirmed.


There is also some uncertainty because KTM has been testing more than one new engine configuration. The 490 twin seen here appears different from another prototype powertrain believed to be intended as a future replacement for KTM’s larger 690 single-cylinder engine. So the two projects should not be treated as the same motorcycle.





The new twin-cylinder engine will not remain Duke-only. A KTM 490 Adventure is expected to use the same basic engine, giving KTM a twin-cylinder adventure motorcycle below its larger 790 and 890 models. An RC 490 sports bike is also possible.


That would put the RC directly into the territory occupied by motorcycles such as the Aprilia RS 457 and Kawasaki Ninja 500. The 490 should offer stronger highway performance and smoother twin-cylinder power delivery than the 390 without jumping to KTM’s bigger middleweights. Much will depend on weight and price.


A 60 bhp motorcycle that stays reasonably close to the 390 Duke in mass would be very different from a heavier middleweight making similar power. Likewise, aggressive local pricing would matter if KTM wants the 490 to be more than a niche step-up model. Those numbers are still missing.
