Tom Holland opens up about self-love during his sobriety journey

Tom Holland is reflecting on how sobriety changed his relationship with himself, saying the journey helped him recognise “how much I love my best self”.

The Spider-Man star discussed his experience at Drink Las Vegas at the Bellagio, where he also spoke about his connection to the city and its drinking culture, as per TMZ video.

“Being in Vegas is so, so easy for me; any excuse to get to Vegas is good,” Holland said, referring to the temptations associated with visiting Las Vegas.

Holland previously detailed his decision to stop drinking alcohol during an appearance on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast. He said he had become “enslaved” to alcohol before deciding to take part in Dry January at the start of 2022.

What began as a one-month challenge eventually became a longer commitment. Holland said the decision was particularly difficult because of England’s drinking culture and the role alcohol often played in socialising.

“I felt like I couldn’t be social,” the actor recalled. “I felt like I couldn’t go to the pub and have a lime soda. I couldn’t go out for dinner. I was really, really struggling.”

He eventually questioned why he felt so dependent on drinking.

“I just sort of said to myself, like, ‘Why? Why am I enslaved to this drink? Why am I so obsessed by the idea of having this drink?’” Holland said.

After completing the initial challenge, he set himself a goal of six months without alcohol. Reaching that milestone, Holland said, left him feeling “the happiest I’ve ever been in my life”.

The experience has since shaped how he views his “best self” and his confidence.
