Chandigarh: Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann has convened a meeting of the 7-member coordination committee constituted in connection with the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026.




The meeting is scheduled to be held at the chief minister’s official residence on Sept 27.




On Aug 16, the Punjab govt constituted the seven-member coordination committee to maintain continuous liaison with the committee set up by Akal Takht on matters concerning the Act. The committee will also submit its suggestions and reports on key issues to the Punjab govt for consideration.




Passed by the Punjab Vidhan Sabha , the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026, amended the existing legal framework and introduced stricter penalties, including life imprisonment and hefty fines, for acts of desecration (beadbi).




Akal Takht had proposed at least 10 modifications across five clauses of the Act, including the crucial removal of all references to a “custodian”. The Sikh clergy had given the state govt a one-month deadline to revise the legislation in accordance with its suggestions.
