A delegation of around 20 senior business leaders, led by Praveen Khandelwal, Member of Parliament for Chandni Chowk and General Secretary of the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), met Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at Duti Bhavan in New Delhi. The meeting discussed concerns raised by merchants regarding the proposed 0.40% MDR on UPI transactions above Rs 2,000. Important discussions were also held in this meeting. The No UPI Day scheduled for tomorrow was withdrawn.

Notable among them were All India Consumer Products Federation AICPDF President Darhysheel Patil, All India Mobile Retailers Association AIMRA President Kailash Lakhiani and All India Jewelers and Goldsmiths Federation President Pankaj Arora.

The decision of 'No UPI Day' is reversed

Praveen Khandelwal said that after constructive discussions with the Finance Minister and assurances to address business concerns, AICPDF and AIMRA have decided to withdraw their protest against the proposed 'No UPI Day' on October 2. These organizations had earlier on October 2 appealed to avoid the use of UPI.

What concerns do businesses have about MDR?

Trade associations raised the issue of the potential economic impact of the proposed MDR. He especially emphasized on small and medium sized businesses. He said businesses should not be burdened with additional costs while maintaining the pace of digital payments. But merchants have made it clear that they do not intend to oppose digital payments. He has shown his support for the success of Digital India Mission and UPI.

Promise to continue dialogue with Govt

The Finance Minister listened to the concerns of the delegation and expressed the government's commitment to promote digital transactions by considering the interests of all stakeholders. The trade associations hoped that further dialogue between the government and trade associations would continue and develop a framework for UPI- policies, which would strengthen the digital economy and protect the interests of businesses and MSMEs.
