Will UPI apps charge for payments?

The new system does not include direct platform charges from consumers for UPI payments made through apps like Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm. According to reports, from October 15, a 0.4% MDR material discount rate will be applicable on certain merchant UPI transactions above ₹2,000, but due to the festive period and at the request of merchant associations, this fee will be reduced. 1 January 2027 The proposal for postponement till is under consideration of NPCI and Govt. Why the decline in UPI transactions?

According to National Payments Corporation of India NPCI data, UPI saw a total of 2,407 crore transactions in September, compared to 2,450 crore transactions in August. This represents a decrease of about 1.8%. The total value of UPI transactions in August was ₹29.82 lakh crore. But it fell to Rs 29.37 lakh crore in September, i.e. a decline of roughly 1.5% in total transaction value. However, industry experts attributed this to the 31-day period in August and 30 days in September. According to him, the number of average daily transactions has not decreased.

What did the RBI Governor say about UPI transactions?

According to RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, the introduction of nominal charges in the form of MDR is not expected to have a significant impact on the number of UPI transactions. He said that there are currently no signs of a significant decline in the number of transactions.
