SBI Data Leak: A leak of customers' personal information has been discovered during an investigation into millions of records linked to the State Bank of India (SBI), the country's largest public sector bank. This incident has sparked concern among account holders, with fears primarily centered on identity theft and banking fraud. People are questioning whether cybercriminals could use this data to take out fraudulent loans in their names. They also want to know how such an incident would be detected and what steps they should take to keep themselves safe.
Data leak incident came to light on October 16
According to the SBI, the bank received an alert regarding a potential data leak on October 16. This information was provided by the bank’s threat intelligence service provider, the Defence Cyber Agency, and the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In). Upon receiving the alert, the bank immediately initiated its cybersecurity protocols.
In its initial investigation, the bank examined approximately 3.75 lakh (375,000) records. Among these, 3,897 records were found to contain customers' personally identifiable information (PII). However, the full extent of the data leak and the potential impact on customers are still under investigation.
Can hackers take out fraudulent loans in your name?
Following the news of the data leak, the primary concern is the possibility of fraudulent loans. It is important to understand that a data leak does not automatically mean that someone can easily take out a loan in your name. However, the exposure of your personal information could make it easier for criminals to commit fraud.
For instance, if someone possesses your name, mobile number, date of birth, home address, or details regarding past loans, they could attempt to impersonate you. Fraudsters might call you, posing as bank officials; by citing your actual personal details, they aim to gain your trust. They may then attempt to solicit an OTP, banking credentials, or other sensitive, confidential information from you. In some cases, criminals may attempt to submit fraudulent loan applications using this information.
However, whether a loan is approved in your name depends on several factors. Crucial among these are the information held by the criminal and the identity verification processes employed by the bank or lending institution. While it is very difficult to secure a loan in your name from a major bank, your data could potentially be misused by smaller lending firms that offer smaller loan amounts.
Uncovering Fraud Through Your Credit Report
To detect any fraudulent loans taken out in your name, check your credit report periodically. Look for any loans or credit cards that you did not apply for. Additionally, pay close attention to the 'credit inquiries' listed in your report. Whenever you apply for a loan or credit card, the lender checks your credit report; if you notice an inquiry that you did not initiate, contact the respective lender to investigate it.
Steps Customers Should Take to Avoid Fraud
In light of such incidents, SBI customers need to remain vigilant. First, monitor your bank account transactions regularly and report any unfamiliar transactions to the bank immediately. Be wary of phone calls or messages that create a sense of urgency regarding your account, a loan, or a KYC update. Fraudsters may use your personal information to pose as genuine bank officials.
Never share your OTP, PIN, or password with anyone. Do not trust individuals who claim to be bank officials and request such information over the phone. Furthermore, do not install any 'remote access' apps on your phone at the request of an unknown caller. If funds are withdrawn from your bank account without your authorization, notify SBI immediately. You can also report cyber-financial fraud by calling 1930. Additionally, a complaint can also be filed on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
