October can bring cooler mornings, but afternoons in many parts of India can still feel uncomfortably hot. As the season changes, people may stop carrying water bottles, skip sunscreen or return to intense outdoor workouts . These changes seem harmless, but the body responds to actual weather conditions, not the calendar.
Drinking water only when thirst strikesWhen the heat feels less intense, drinking enough water can slip down the priority list. Long commutes, office meetings and daily errands can make people overlook their fluid needs, even when they continue to sweat.
Dehydration can cause headaches, tiredness, dizziness and difficulty concentrating. Carrying a water bottle and drinking regularly throughout the day can help. Older adults, children and outdoor workers need particular attention. Those advised to restrict fluids for medical reasons should follow their doctor's guidance.
Assuming sunscreen is no longer necessarySunscreen often disappears from daily routines once summer seems over. However, ultraviolet (UV) radiation can damage the skin throughout the year, even when the weather feels comfortable.
The US Food and Drug Administration explains how to protect yourself from UV radiation. Broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, protective clothing, hats and shade can help reduce exposure. Sunscreen should be reapplied according to the product instructions.
Dressing for the season instead of the temperatureA pleasant morning can turn into a hot afternoon, especially during a long commute or an outdoor work shift. Heavy, tight clothing may trap heat and make sweat evaporation less effective.
Lightweight, breathable fabrics can improve comfort. As Dr Ajay Sawant, Consultant – Internal Medicine, KIMS Hospital, Thane, explained, “People should respond to the conditions they are experiencing rather than assuming that the risk of heat-related illness ends with summer.”
That advice applies to everyday clothing choices, too. Dressing according to the day's actual conditions can make prolonged outdoor exposure more manageable.
Returning to intense workouts too quicklyWhen the weather seems more comfortable, it is tempting to increase running distances, resume outdoor sports or exercise harder. But heat and humidity can still put extra strain on the body.
Choose cooler hours where possible, increase exercise intensity gradually and take regular breaks. Stop exercising if unusual weakness, nausea, headache or dizziness develops. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's heat and health guidance offers advice on preventing heat-related illness.
Brushing off early signs of heat stress Feeling unusually drained after an ordinary walk may seem harmless, but persistent symptoms deserve attention. Heavy sweating, weakness, nausea and dizziness can indicate heat exhaustion. Move to a cooler place, stop physical activity and begin cooling the body.
Dr Sawant stresses that “Regular hydration, appropriate sun protection and recognising early symptoms of heat stress remain important whenever temperatures stay high.”
Confusion, seizures, fainting or a very high body temperature can indicate heatstroke, a medical emergency. Call emergency services immediately rather than waiting for home remedies to work.
October may signal a seasonal change, but it does not guarantee relief from heat. Keeping daily routines flexible and paying attention to the body's warning signs can help protect health until temperatures genuinely fall.
