India and Central Asia’s biggest state Kazakhstan have signed an extradition treaty on Tuesday to combat cross-border international crime and terror

The document was signed by Prosecutor General of the Republic of Kazakhstan Berik Assilov and Ambassador of India to Kazakhstan Y.K. Sailas Thangal.

The Treaty establishes a legal framework for the extradition of persons wanted by the law enforcement authorities of either Party for the purpose of bringing them to criminal responsibility or enforcing a court sentence. This will help ensure the principle of the inevitability of punishment for crimes committed.

This international document completes the formation of the treaty and legal framework between Kazakhstan and India in the field of criminal justice, as the two countries already have agreements in force on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters and the transfer of sentenced persons.

According to the Head of Kazakhstan’s supreme supervisory authority, the Treaty is of particular importance in view of the consistent development of trade, economic, cultural and humanitarian relations between the two countries.

More than 600 Indian companies operate in Kazakhstan in the pharmaceutical, mining, medical and food industries.

India ranks first among non-CIS countries in terms of the number of foreign students studying in Kazakhstan. In the 2025–2026 academic year alone, nearly 10,000 Indian students were enrolled in educational institutions across Kazakhstan.

In recent years, there has also been an increase in the number of citizens of both countries travelling to each other's countries, including for tourism purposes.

The expansion of interstate relations and increased mobility of citizens require not only the further development of economic and humanitarian cooperation but also joint efforts by the two states to combat crime.
