A Bargain Hunt couple bagged the coveted Golden Gavel after making a show first profit.

The pair took part in the show today, where Kaz and Richard made their three purchases in the hope of making a profit. The first was a traditional antique lantern, which the auctioneer described as "wonderful". It was from 1900-1910 and he was convinced it could sell for £60 - £100, but they had paid £109 for it.

They had to buy something that would fit in their pocket and they picked a tiger eye ring. The classic 70s piece of jewellery cost them £22 - but the auctioneer had priced it under the £20 mark.

The final piece was a stop sign, described by the auctioneer as "something you'd find in a student house on a Friday night after eight pints of beer", and he was hoping to get £30 - £40 for it.

When it came to the auction itself, the lantern got off to a slow start but eventually they managed to get £110 for the item, leaving them thrilled - as their hope for a Golden Gavel continued.

The ring - purchased for £22 - managed to rake them in £30, with the pair now at a running total of £9 profit. Describing it as a rare opportunity, the pair managed to sell the stop sign for £35, which meant they'd bagged a profit in all three sales.

"Be still my beating heart! You made 10 quid! I don't think I've ever known anyone make £10 and get a Golden Gavel," host Charlie Ross said excitedly as the pair celebrated their success.

Then it was to the blue team to see how they had done, who managed to secure a profit of £12 on their first item. The second item, a solid oak table, lost them £5, whilst their third and final item cost them a whopping £225.

It initially seemed like they wouldn't make any profit, with the first offer of £65, but they managed to lose £35 on the item, which the host described as a "bold" buy. However, the special item selected by their expert sold for a total of £30, and got them a £25 profit, meaning they had only lost £30 overall.

The red couple had gone with the bonus buy too and ended up losing, as they had lost more money. However, the reds still ended up securing their Golden Gavels because of their earlier successes.

*Bargain Hunt airs weekdays on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
